Rihanna’s AOL Session is finally online (however, videos are unavailable in some countries). Below you will find videos of the recording and Q&A.
It’s not readily apparent in her television interviews or music videos, but Rihanna’s got a funny side. “I’m a prankster,” she told AOL when she and her band took over our studio for a Sessions taping.
Throughout the performance and interview, Rihanna was delightfully giggling and showing a lighter side that had all but disappeared recently. Of course, two days earlier she’d snagged a pair of Grammys, a feat that would make anyone smile. Check out her thoughts on the awards, fashion, possible collaborations and more below.
AOL: Congratulations on winning two Grammys for ‘Run This Town Tonight.’ How did you celebrate? Were you surprised to win?
Rihanna: After the Grammys, we went out to [label executive] L.A. Reid and Jay-Z’s dinner. They hosted a dinner together and then we went to drinks [at an] after party at a club. We had a blast. It was very much a surprise to win because the Grammys are really tricky. It’s difficult to win one, so you have to go into it not expecting to win so it’s always a pleasant surprise. And we were definitely pleasantly surprised.
AOL: Where do you keep your Grammys?
Rihanna: Well, when I get them [laughs], I have to find a nice little special place for them.
AOL: Where do you think is a good spot?
Rihanna: I haven’t figured it out yet. I just bought a new home and was still working on getting it furnished and put together and all the renovations, so when I move in I’ll figure it out. It has to be a special spot.
AOL: You hung out with Taylor Swift on Grammy night. Any advice for her?
Rihanna: Well, giving advice to someone like Taylor Swift, she’s such a sweetheart, you know. She’s very humble and she has a great work ethic, but she’s also truly talented and an amazing songwriter as well. She’s in good hands. She will do well as long as she remains exactly who she is, doing the type of music she loves.
AOL: Would you like to collaborate with her?
Rihanna: I would love to collaborate with Taylor Swift. She’s amazing. She has an unbelievable voice.
AOL: A fake collaboration between you and Lady Gaga made the rounds last year. When are we going to see a real one between you two?
Rihanna: A collaboration between Gaga and myself would be really cool because we do a similar type of music and we both really love fashion, so I’m sure it’ll be a hot video. I would love to collaborate with her.
AOL: You’re such a fashion trendsetter already. Who do you feel is the person that’s really setting the trends?
Rihanna: Actually, when I’m getting dressed, I’m really inspired by first my mood and the occasion. Every time you see me it’s a different color, a different shape, a different style because really, we just go off of instinct. Whatever we feel, at that very moment, we just go for it.
AOL: What creative outlet does fashion give you that singing does not?
Rihanna: Fashion is another world for me to get my creativity out. Singing is a career, you know. I love it — it’s a passion. Fashion, on the other side, I don’t work in fashion and that world is something that I enjoy. I enjoy music also, but it’s more liberating because you get to display how you feel inside with clothing. It’s another way for me to be creative in a fun way.
AOL: You said you aren’t in the fashion business, but do you want to be? Everyone’s waiting for you to start some kind of fashion line.
Rihanna: Yes, I’m not in the fashion business yet, but a fashion line is something that’s on my list. It’s something that I’m really passionate about and I would love to get into.
AOL: What else is on the list?
Rihanna: On the list, next, is tour. We start the tour this spring in April. We start in Europe and it’s gonna be a world tour. So it’s gonna be long, but I can’t wait.
AOL: What can people expect from that?
Rihanna: Well, we’ve never done a tour to this capacity, which I’m very excited about. The production is unbelievable. The costumes, we just took it to a whole another level. Visually and sonically it’s going to be a big step up from the last time. We just keep growing every time and this time it’s going to be a massive, massive production that I cannot wait for.
AOL: Is it daunting or comforting to know where you’re going to be several months from now?
Rihanna: When I look at my schedule, I like to know what’s next. We go over the calendar, we kind of go through the months roughly, but then we go into detail and the minute it starts breaking down into the times of every day, it’s a little overwhelming. I prefer not to look at it. Sometimes my assistant would say, “Okay, tomorrow you have this and this and this, but then the next day ?” and I’m like, “Whoa, tomorrow is enough.” It’s a little overwhelming at times, but it is my life and I love it.
AOL: Let’s talk about ‘Rated R.’ Do you feel like people understand what you’re trying to do?
Rihanna: Definitely. When we first made ‘Rated R,’ I kind of braced myself, prepared myself for it to be a culture shock to people’s ears, especially my fans, who are used to the type of music that I have been doing so far. I knew it would have taken a while before people got into it and got into the new music, the new sound, the new look, and now people are getting it and it’s the best feeling. The album is doing really well all over the world, and that’s the best revenge.
AOL: Is the girl that sang ‘Umbrella’ gone?
Rihanna: No, I’m the same girl that sang ‘Umbrella.’ It’s me, Rihanna, and I just grow. When I did ‘Umbrella’ I was 19 and now I’m about to be 22 years old. There’s a lot that changes in three years and I’m looking forward to what’s next.
AOL: Do you want to do movies and if so, what’s your ideal role?
Rihanna: Movies are definitely something that I want to get into soon. My ideal role, I actually love comedy. I’m pretty much like a prankster so that’s the whole new world that I’d love to venture off into. But action and stuff like that, things that are cool, comic book movies — stuff that’s interesting.
AOL: Do you have a role in mind? Do you want to play an action hero?
Rihanna: Who knows? Whatever they throw my way, I’ll take it.–Melinda Newman
