The Beatles sold more than two million individual songs and more than 450,000 albums worldwide in their first week of release on iTunes, Apple said. Of the catalogue of 13 Beatles studio albums released last week, 'Abbey Road' was the top-selling digital album in sixth position overall for the week ending November 22. But despite the fanfare, their 40-year-old classics failed to trump new material from the likes of R&B star Rihanna or a Christmas cover album from the cast of 'Glee'.

'The Beatles Box Set' was number 10 on the iTunes album charts for the week, but despite 'Here Comes The Sun' being the best-selling Beatles digital single, it failed to finish in the top ten. The entire back catalogue was released on iTunes for the first time on November 16, ending years of negotiations between Apple founder Steve Jobs and management company and record label EMI.

Billboard.com said the debut of the Fab Four compared favourably to those of other bands that for years resisted joining the digital music revolution. Rock band Lez Zeppelin made its digital debut in November 2007, generating total U.S. digital album sales of 47,000 units and 300,000 individual songs in the first week according to Nielsen SoundScan.

According to Apple, Rihanna's new album 'Loud' was the best seller in the U.S. last week, followed by 'The Christmas Album' by the cast of Glee.Apple did not release Beatles chart positions outside the U.S.
